Being housebound can wreak havoc on your skin, including your lips.⁣ Sometimes we forget to stay hydrated. Now that we’re all spending a lot of time living and working indoors, we’re all on the look out for things to do, projects to try. Here’s a super simple video tutorial to make homemade lip balm.

DIY beauty recipes are a great way to stay occupied and incorporate into our self-care routine. Many of the ingredients in this recipe are what I like to call “multitaskers,” that just means that they can be used in different products and in different ways.

Opting for homemade health and beauty products is a great way to avoid harsh, unnecessary chemicals. They save you money, they’re healthier for you, and they’re plastic-free. This homemade lip balm recipe is more effective than most of the mass-produced currently on the market. The best part of this recipe is that it’s petroleum free, so it’s better for both you and ⁣the environment.

How-To Video

Our bathrooms and beauty products usually contribute largely to our consumption of single use plastics.⁣ Like many other items in our bathrooms (shampoo, conditioner, shave gel, body wash), lip balm (and lip gloss, lipstick) usually comes in plastic.⁣ Minimizing your consumption of mass produced products, and even making your own can help limit the incidence of single use plastic.

This homemade lip balm is cost-effective and the ingredients can easily be found at a bulk or health food store or online. Check local health food stores first; if you still cannot find them, then try online shops. Consider making a double batch so you can keep one in the car and the other in your handbag. You can also play around with the beetroot powder, and add more or less depending on how rich you want the color.

The one in the picture above is my own. I stored it in this fab antique enameled tin my mother-in-law brought over from Europe when she was young.
