Cloves have antiseptic properties and can help prevent gum disease. Clove essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties. In other cultures, people use cloves by themselves often.
This homemade mouthwash is cost-effective, and contains very few organic ingredients. The ingredients are easily available. Check local health food stores first. If you can’t find them locally, try Amazon.
Like many other items in our bathrooms (shampoo, conditioner, shave gel, body wash), mouthwash usually comes in plastic packaging. If you’re a bit creative, and looking to cut down on your plastic intake, give this easy homemade mouthwash recipe a go.
How to Make Homemade Mouthwash
Ingredients
- 1 cup water (preferably filtered)
- 1 tsp. of baking soda
- 5-10 drops of clove oil (substitute cinnamon bark, cassia)
- 5-10 drops of peppermint essential oil
Directions
- Mix together well.
- Place store store in a reusable glass bottle (or repurposed, or upcycled).
- Gargle a small amount.
- Don’t swallow.
Note: I tried this recipe as is and found the “tingling” of the clove essential oil to be a bit harsh. Using this recipe as a base, I then doubled the amount of water, and that did the trick. If you find the ratio of ingredients above to be too harsh, consider using more water or less of the clove and peppermint essential oils.
