This rich and creamy homemade rose body cream is great for dry skin. It contains skin–loving ingredients like cocoa butter, avocado butter, and squalane oil. Avocado oil is extracted by pressing the pulp of the fruit. It is a great source of Vitamins D, E and A. For centuries avocado oil has been used for skin and hair care by the Indigenous peoples of Central and South America.

The avocado is regarded as a superfood because it is so nutrient–dense. Avocado oil functions well as a carrier oil for other flavors. Avocado oil has a similar monounsaturated fat profile to olive oil and is naturally low acidic. If you’re looking for ideas on ways you can incorporate this beneficial fruit into your daily life, read our post 3 uses for avocados.

Aside from its health and culinary applications, avocado oil has beauty benefits as well, which is why it has gained popularity of late. It is used in cosmetics for its moisturizing and regenerative properties. When used in hair and skin care products it is usually refined, and the color and scent are removed after extracting. For some DIY skin and hair beneficial homemade products incorporating this wonderful ingredient, read our post 5 beauty treatments using avocado oil.

This oil is excellent at lowering cholesterol, aiding in weight–loss and is even good for eye health. Due to its high nutrient content, it is still used in skin care products for dry, damaged and aging skin to prevent wrinkles and fine lines, and to lock in skin’s moisture. It is still used in hair care products for its essential fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid content.

About the Ingredients

This recipe creates a thick lotion that absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling soft. The combination of moisturizing butters like avocado and cocoa thicken the cream, while lightweight oils like sunflower and squalane ensure there’s no greasy feeling. It’s scented with rose essential oil and rose extract (hydrosol), which is a sweet yet sophisticated floral with notes of geranium and vanilla. A touch of rose petal powder creates a soft pink hue.

Did you know that rose essential oil was Cleopatra’s favorite? She used to apply it to her entire body, even though back then it was hard to come by and therefore pretty expensive (and still is). If you’ve never made lotion before, it’s surprisingly easy. All you have to do is combine water, oils, and additives. Not ready to jump into lotion making quite yet? Body butter is a great option—learn the difference between lotion, cream and body butter here.

Equipment Prep

Sanitize your utensils by boiling them in distilled water and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, whisks, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your mask. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible. If you’re a beginner DIY’er and unsure about how to best avoid bacterial and mold growth in your homemade self care products, check out our quick guide to cosmetic preservatives.

How to Make Homemade Rose Body Cream

Yield: 8 ounces
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 1 hour

    Water Phase
    • 4 oz. (113 g) distilled water
    • 0.04 oz. (1 g) sea salt (or preservative of choice, optional)
    Oil Phase
    • 1 oz. (28 g) sunflower oil
    • 1 oz. (28 g) squalane oil (can substitute olive oil)
    • 0.5 oz. (14 g) avocado butter (can substitute mango, shea or hemp seed butter)
    • 0.14 oz. (4 g) cocoa butter
    • 0.7 oz. (20 g) beeswax
    Cool–Down Phase
    • 10 drops rose essential oil
    • 0.1 oz. (2.8 g) rose extract (hydrosol, can substitute rose water)
    • 1 tsp. rose petal powder
    Directions
    1. In a large container, dissolve sea salt into the distilled water, add lavender extract and vegetable glycerin. Whisk to mix well.
    2. In a separate heat–safe container, combine sunflower oil, squalane oil, avocado butter, cocoa butter and beeswax. Heat in a double boiler or in the microwave using on 30–60 second bursts until the beeswax is melted and the mixture is at least 120–130° F.
    3. When the oil phase and water phase are ready, tap the bottom of the containers to release bubbles. Pour the oil mix into the water mixture and begin whisking. Blend the mixture for 60–90 seconds, making sure the oil and water phases are fully emulsified. Scrape the bowl to make sure you got every bit into the water.
    4. Continue whisking until the temperature drops to about 90–100° F. Add rose essential oil and rose extract. Whisk for another 60–90 seconds to fully combine.
    5. Add rose petal powder and stick blend for about 30 seconds until fully combined and there are no clumps. If it separates a little, just keep stick blending for several minutes until there are no large particles on top (a few small particles is fine).
