How to Make Homemade Body Butter
Make your own body butter at home. Our bathrooms and beauty products usually contribute largely to our single use plastics in our homes. Here’s a super simple homemade body butter recipe. Opting for a DIY is a great way to avoid harsh, unnecessary chemicals.
Like many other items in our bathrooms (shampoo, conditioner, shave gel, body wash), moisturizers usually comes in plastic. Minimizing your consumption of mass produced products, and even making your own can help limit the incidence of single use plastic.
This homemade body butter is cost-effective and the ingredients are easily available. Check local health food stores first. If you can’t find them locally, try online shops. Consider including it in your daily beauty regimen.
How to Make Homemade Body Butter
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 3/4 cup cocoa butter
- essential oils of choice (optional, I use blueberry seed or pomegranate seed for their amazing anti-aging properties)
Directions
- Melt the oil and butter.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Add your oils (pomegranate seed, blueberry seed, carrot seed, etc.).
- Freeze until solid.
- Remove and allow to soften slightly at room temperature.
- Whisk until smooth (by hand or electric).
- And store in a jar (reusable, repurposed, upcycled, etc.).
Note: Finished body butter will last around 12 weeks.
I used both pomegranate seed and blueberry seed essential oils due to their tremendous benefits for skin, among other things. The blueberry oil together with the cocoa butter make for a surprisingly pleasant aroma. Delicious, like chocolate-covered berries. This is my new favorite moisturizer. I apply it all over after a cold shower, before bed. I fall asleep every night smelling of dessert…but without the calories.
