Rose Hyaluronic Gel Facial Mask
This rose hyaluronic gel facial mask leaves skin hydrated and soft. Hyaluronic acid has water–absorbing properties, which creates the unique gel–like texture. The mask needs to sit overnight to allow the skincare ingredients to absorb—this will also get rid of the clumps that occur when initially mixing.
Rose water adds a subtle floral scent, while rose petals powder gives it a soft pink color. Did you know that rose essential oil was Cleopatra’s favorite? She used to apply it to her entire body, even though back then it was hard to come by and therefore pretty expensive (and still is). The exact amount you use is up to you, but a small pinch goes a long way. The more you add, the more saturated the color will be. For example, you’ll notice our batch is lighter.

If you’ve never made lotion before, it’s surprisingly easy. All you have to do is combine water, oils, and additives. Not ready to jump into lotion making quite yet? Body butter is a great option—learn the difference between lotion, cream and body butter here.
Our skin’s natural pH is at 4.5–5.5, and the mask may be lower. The pH will depend on your distilled water. You can raise the pH of your mask, if necessary. But this process involves adding drops of lye water to the finished product. Lye is a highly caustic and toxic chemical that can dissolve any organic matter (like your skin). We do not recommend taking such extreme measures. Instead, just choose distilled water that has a higher pH balance.
Equipment Prep
Sanitize your utensils by boiling them in distilled water and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, whisks, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your mask. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible. What You Will Need
- One 4 oz. glass jar with tight–fitting lid
How to Make Rose Hyaluronic Gel Facial Mask
Yield: 4 ounces
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 30 minutes
Water Phase
- 4.3 oz. (122 g) distilled water
- 0.04 oz. (1 g) sea salt (or preservative of choice, optional)
- 2–3 drops alkaline drops (pH balance booster)
- 1.4 oz. (40 g) rose water (hydrosol)
- 0.15 oz. (4 g) water soluble green tea extract
- 0.15 oz. (4 g) water soluble calendula extract
- 0.15 oz. (4 g) panthenol
Emulsify Phase
- 0.5 oz. (14 g) hyaluronic acid
- 0.7 oz. (20 g) vegetable glycerin
- Pinch of rose petal powder
Directions
- In a small container, mix hyaluronic acid and vegetable glycerin. Add a pinch of rose petal powder—the amount is so small it will not register on a scale. Mix together until fully incorporated.
- In a separate small container, dissolve the sea salt (if using) and panthenol into the distilled water. Mix until the panthenol is fully dissolved. Then add alkaline drops, rose water, green tea extract and calendula extract. Mix again.
- Pour the water phase into the emulsify phase and mix until thickened. Cover the container with plastic wrap or a lid and allow it to sit overnight. The next day, stir the mixture to fully incorporate.
- The pH of the mask should be at 4.5–5.5. To test, pour a small amount of the face mask (5–10 grams) into a separate container and dip in a pH meter. If it’s at 4.5–5.5, then you do not need to adjust it. If it is below 4.5, it may need to be adjusted by adding 1 drop of alkaline booster at a time, then mixing and testing again.
- Pour the product into the jar. Store in a cool, dark, and dry place. To use, apply to clean skin. Leave on for 15–20 minutes, and gently wash away with cold water. Air dry skin. Enjoy!
