Barrel Bag Pattern & Tutorial

Barrel Bag Finished Photo Credit: Sewing Times

This is a beautiful handbag or barrel bag for when you go out or for anytime. Personally, I like the red accents on the piping of the bag. I made two of these One for me and one for my daughter with pink piping, handles and lining fabric she can use for ballet class. The pockets on each side of the bag are perfect for storing cell phones and small items. I’ve shared a printable pattern you can download here to make this lovely barrel bag.

Measurements are metric (in centimeters), the corresponding measurements (in inches) are in parentheses. If you’d like your bag to be a bit sturdier, for more heavy–duty use, you can choose a heavier fabric like upholstery or home décor. The seam allowance is 0.7 cm (0.25 in.). The bag’s finished measurements are approximately 28 cm (11⅛ in.) W × 17 cm (6¾ in.) H × 16 cm (6¼ in.) D.

This is also a great way to use up your fabric scraps for a zero waste approach. The interfacing (fusible fleece) should be attached to the outer fabric. The zipper tabs are 4 cm x 3 cm (1⅝ in. x 1⅛ in.), you can make these from the same outer or lining fabrics, or from a fun contrasting fabric out of your fabric scraps. You can use ready–made piping for the side pocket detail, or make it yourself with cord and bias tape. Whatever you already have handy and is easiest for you.
