Therapeutic Uses of Acorus Calamus Essential Oil

  1. For Massage: 7–8 drops of oil to 10 ml of carrier oil.
  2. Bath: 5–7 drops together with bath salts.
  3. Pain Relief: 4–5 drops of oil to 10 ml of alcohol or carrier oil, saturate cloth and apply to the affected area for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Warming Compresses: 10 drops of oil to 30 ml of carrier oil, or 5–6 drops per 200 ml warm water or 10 ml alcohol.
  5. Hair Rinse: 600 ml warm water + 6 drops of oil mixed with 1 tsp honey.
  6. Adding To Creams And Lotions: 7 drops per 10 g lotion.
Buying and Storage

Acorus calamus essential oil can be ordered online or found at shops that sell essential oils. Be aware of inferior products, as camphor components are sometimes added to this oil. This essential oil has a very short shelf life. It should be stored in a cool dry place away from sunlight.

Precautions

Acorus calamus essential oil is considered a carcinogen and toxic, it is not meant for ingestion. This essential oil can cause hallucinations and convulsions when used in aromatherapy and inhaled. Though it is harmful and toxic in high concentrations, it is medicinal in very small doses.
