5 Ways To Use Oatmeal For Your Skin
In this post we share 5 ways to use oatmeal for your skin. Oatmeal can come in handy for a host of your skin and beauty needs. Oatmeal can soak up the excess oil on your skin and help treat acne. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to treat dry skin and remove dead skin cells.
Most people are privy to the numerous nutritional benefits of oats. But, what are oats? Grains from the cereal plant, Avena Sativa, are called oats. Once harvested, these grains are either used as animal feed, skin products or food. Be it in breakfast, lunch or dinner, a bowlful of oatmeal is your key to general good health and healthy weight loss. The dietary fiber and minerals present in oats help stave off the risk of dangerous medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
In addition, oatmeal can also come in handy for a variety of skin and beauty needs. Oats contain compounds called saponins, which are natural cleansers. They exfoliate skin, and remove the dirt and oil that clog pores.
1. For Acne
Oatmeal can do wonders for your acne. Oatmeal contains zinc that is said to reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria. It also helps soak up excess oil from the skin that may trigger acne.
Directions
- Boil ½ cup of oatmeal in ½ cup of water and let it cool.
- Stir the mixture together until you get a fine paste.
- Apply this mask to your face.
- Let it sit for 20 minutes and rinse it off with warm water.
- You can also add blended tomato paste to the mask.
- Do consult your dermatologist before trying out the mask.
2. For Dry Skin
Oats can remove dead skin cells and act as a natural moisturizer. Their anti-inflammatory properties help to keep skin exfoliated. Oatmeal’s mild pH can help cool down inflamed skin that may be caused by some rash or infection, leading to dry skin.
Directions
- Draw yourself a simple hot bath.
- Add some uncooked oatmeal and baking soda to the bath water.
- Soak in the bath water for about 20 minutes.
- Pat yourself dry.
- You can also use colloidal oatmeal in your bathwater.
- Colloidal oatmeal is a specially blended product, which is designed for baths.
3. For Blackheads
Oatmeal is packed with chemical compounds called saponins, which are known for their natural cleansing properties. Black heads are nothing but clogged pores in your skin. Oatmeal helps to unclog pores and give you smooth and clear skin.
Directions
- Mix 2 tablespoons oatmeal, 3 tablespoons plain yogurt, and ½ tablespoon lemon juice until you get a fine paste.
- Apply to your nose and any other affected areas.
- Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
4. Relieves Itching
Itching is mostly caused by inflammation under the skin or when the skin’s pH level is too high. Oatmeal helps to balance your skin’s natural pH, which helps soften dry skin. It also adds moisture which protects skin from external irritants.
Directions
- Process some oats into powder and mix with water until you get a fine paste.
- Apply paste to the itchy areas of your skin.
- Leave it on for 15 minutes.
- Rinse it off with cold water.
- You can also make a paste of oats and milk and follow the same steps, for even more effective results.
5. Exfoliate
Oatmeal’s saponins have strong exfoliating properties. It helps with removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost layer, giving you fresh, glowing and youthful skin.
Directions
- Mix oatmeal, lukewarm water, sugar, and coconut oil to prepare a simple scrub.
- Apply this scrub to your face and leave for 20 minutes.
- Wipe clean your face with a soft wet washcloth.
- For best results, use the scrub at least twice a week.
Use oatmeal to treat your skin woes for nourished and beautiful skin. If, for any reason, any of the remedies above create an allergic reaction, it is advised that you stop and consult your dermatologist immediately.
